FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Salisbury, MD, July 1, 2013—For the second consecutive year, consulting firm APPI Energy contributed WGES CleanSteps© Carbon Offsets from Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES) to neutralize the environmental impact of ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership’s Marketing, Membership, & Communication Conference (MMCC) at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC, on June 4-5, 2013.
APPI Energy, WGES, and ASAE calculated the anticipated greenhouse gas emissions resulting from MMCC-related automobile travel, hotel stays, and convention center operations. Based on these estimates, APPI Energy purchased 51 carbon offsets from WGES, which are sourced from the Worcester County Landfill Project in Maryland.
“For the second consecutive year, we’ve successfully offset the carbon footprint of the MMCC, supporting ASAE’s pledge to environmental responsibility,” said APPI Energy President/CEO Walter Moore. “APPI Energy’s longstanding relationship with ASAE strengthens our commitment to helping the organization reach its sustainability goals.”
To create carbon offsets, the Worcester County Landfill Project captures methane—a greenhouse gas that is 23 times stronger than carbon dioxide—and destroys it in an enclosed flare. Each WGES CleanSteps® Carbon Offset represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide prevented from entering the air. Purchasing carbon offsets helps to balance the impact of carbon dioxide emissions caused by activities like traveling.
Each WGES CleanSteps® Carbon Offset sold triggers funding into a Carbon Reduction Fund managed by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Established in 2010, this fund is used to develop clean air and water projects in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, and has already supported tree plantings on 45 acres of forest with more than 9,000 trees planted to date.
“We continually review methods to ‘green’ our meetings,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE. “APPI Energy assists us in reducing our carbon footprint and limiting our impressions on the local community.” More information is available at www.wges.com/carbonoffsets.
